As we coast through mid-summer our garden has soared in height. The last few weeks have been dramatic with the hottest days and plenty of heavy downpours. This couldn’t be a better growing season for our garden or for wildlife. I’m grateful wildlife is showing early signs of recovery following two very bad years.

I haven’t done much to our garden this month. I’ve pulled out a few stickywilly plants, they come out easily by hand, and pulled out nettles where I’ve seen them. I hoed a few 30 x 30cm spots to add a few plants I’ve grown from seed and division. And I’ve deadheaded our Astrantia and some ox-eye daisies to encourage another burst of flowers; not essential but helps keep the flowers going.

Many of our plants haven’t even flowered yet because they are late-summer plants, such as the asters and Althaea cannabina. Each day we have something new to look forward to thanks to our planned succession of flowers and foliage.
