September is one of my favourite months in gardens thanks to the mix of dieback and a final blast of late-flower power. Flowers now can be some of the most vibrant and colourful against the duller backdrop. Shapes are often highlighted too by rain drops, dew and amazing sunrises and sunsets.

1) Linaria purpurea

It’s been flowering all season, starting as a spire before morphing into some kind of octopus. I love Linaria purpurea for easy purple and soft green leaves. Will self sow gently around in full sun adding pops of colour here and there. Excellent.

Plant community tip: rarely takes over, growing up through low plants. Enjoy the randomness or pull out easily where you don’t want it.

2) Rudbeckia missouriensis
