Growing vegetables is high stress. There are too many things that can and do go wrong and unlike for ornamental flowers, a damaged edible crop rarely recovers leaving you hungry and frustrated. When a crop does do particularly well I am overjoyed and I think it’s fair enough to celebrate it.

Right now, as of this minute, and it may change in the next, our basil patch looks, smells and tastes wonderful. Basil is a tricky plant to grow. Don’t ask me why, it just is. It’s either happy or it chooses to die for no reason.

I say no reason but of course, there always is a reason and it’s usually a lack of moisture, warmth and sunlight all presented to the plant on a golden platter in a very consistent way.

If green basil is tricky, purple basil is even more of a diva and I’ve never been able to grow it well… until now my friends. For there it is sitting pretty in the photo above as evidence. Not one but a whole two rows of purple basil sandwiched between six rows of green basil.
