Shade planting design blending into sun loving
H4 / Zone 8b-9a exposed Yorkshire garden design where you can clearly see the sunny area of planting at the back of the photo, seamlessly blending into the shaded area in the foreground.

In this planting design case study I’ll focus on a small 5m x 4m shaded corner of a larger garden. The plants used in this space could be replicated in the same size space or smaller by planting fewer of each plant.

Shade planting is one of my favourite design opportunities, it’s up there with public and front gardens for exciting spaces. I guess because traditionally shade has been seen as a problem to be neglected, giving me prime opportunity to jazz them up.

Most people in today’s world live in urban areas with small, tiny or no garden. Sandwiched between shade creating buildings. Making shade planting an important wild way topic for us to explore.
