When I rediscovered the joy of growing plants about ten years ago, I remember thinking there wasn’t a single flower I knew that I really loved the look of. The flowers I saw in most gardens were all a bit ‘take it or leave it’, so I set about exploring to find at least one I could say reflected my style.

It took a while but I found it in the Brighton Pavilion gardens one lunch break, a bright white star. The spiky shape fit my impression of contemporary style, those bright flowers held on rigid stems standing out cleanly from the greens below.
