Interested to read about the self sown Verbascum or Mullein. We discovered two or three plants in one of our flowerbeds last year. We've not had them before and aren't aware of any in the gardens near us. We transplanted them to our "anything goes" bed and they've come up again this year. We had Mullein moth caterpillars on them last Summer, but there's no sign of any this year sadly.

Seeds can last for many years, I guess for a very long time as our gardens show! :)

I have had the same problem with fennel. Matt Mattus wrote that early transplants often flower and bulb doesn’t develop. Sowing seed by summer solstice produces bulbs better, but later. I love the flowers anyway.
